| A Pizza Timeline |
| 6th Century BCE
- The soldiers of Darius the Great (521-486 B.C.), accustomed
to lengthy marches, bake a kind of bread flat upon their
shields and then cover it with cheese and dates.
|
| 3rd Century BCE
- Marcus Porcius Cato (234-149 BCE), also known
as Cato the Elder, writes the first history of Rome, and
includes an entry about "flat round of dough dressed
with olive oil, herbs, and honey baked on stones."
|
| 1522 - Spaniards
who had been to Mexico and Peru introduce the tomato,
although it is believed by most to be poisonous. A decorative
plant, the tomato is grown by everybody who is anybody
but eaten only by the nobodies. But with only flour, olive
oil, lard, cheese, and herbs with which to feed their
families, the poor in Naples put tomatoes in their flatbread.
They call the dish pizzaioli. |
| 18th Century
- Queen Maria Carolina d'Asburgo Lorena, wife of the King
of Naples, Ferdinando IV (1751-1821), has a special oven
built in their summer palace of Capodimonte so that their
chef can serve pizzas to her and to her guests. |
1830 - The
world's first pizzeria, Port' Alba, opens in Italy. Pizzas
are baked in an oven lined
with lava from the local volcano. |
| Late 19th Century
- Pizza is introduced to Chicago by a immigrant
Italian peddlers. They walk up and down Taylor Street
with a metal washtubs of pizzas on their heads, crying
out that their wares cost 2 cents a chew. This is the
traditional way that pizza used to be sold in Naples--in
copper cylindrical drums with false bottoms that were
packed with charcoal from the oven to keep the pizzas
hot, the name of the pizzeria is embossed on the drum. |
| 1889 - After
eating the flavored peasant flatbread while out touring
the country with her husband, King Umberto I, Queen Margherita
Terea Giovanni summons restaurant owner Raffaele Esposito
to the palace. He is asked to create a selection of pizzas
for the queen and he does, presenting her 3 kinds of pizza.
The pizza is delivered to the palace because the queen
does not want to go all the way to the restaurant to eat
it-the first pizza delivery. A patriotic man, Esposito
had wanted to make a special pizza including the colors
of the Italian flag in his dish, so he added tomatoes
(red), mozzarella cheese (white), and basil (green) to
focaccia bread. And thats the one she likes best.
He names it Pizza Margherita, using part of the queens
name along with part of the name of his restaurant, Pietro
II Pizzaiolo. And since the popular queen eats it, the
peasant food becomes a hit. |
| 1905 - Gennaro
Lombardi opens the first American pizzeria in New York
City. Italian immigrants have created the first truly
American pizzas by adapting the old recipes to the new
ingredients. The tomatoes in the U.S. are completely different,
with milder flavor, so seasoned tomato sauces replace
fresh vegetables. Since you cant get oregano in
the States, marjoram is used. The flour is different,
softer and more pliable, which means that a more flexible
crust replaces the stiffer, heartier Italian crust. And
an entirely different cheese made with cows milk
replaces the robust, flavorful buffalo-milk mozzarella.
Not until the early 1930s will Lombardi he add tables
and chairs and sell spaghetti as well as pizza at his
restaurant. |
| 1920s & 1930s
- U.S. pizzerias in all the major cities become
sit-down restaurants. |
| 1943 - Deep-dish
Chicago style pizza is invented by Ike Sewell at his bar
and grill called Pizzeria Uno. The new pizza spreads across
the American continent with enthusiasm. |
| 1945 - World
War II ends. Veterans stationed in Italy return home craving
the pizza they had eaten there. The demand for pizza takes
off in the U.S. |
| 1948 - Frank
A. Fiorello produces the first commercial pizza-pie mix,
"Roman Pizza Mix," in Worcester, Massachusetts.
|
| 1953 - The
U.S. has at least 15,000 pizzerias; 100,000 stores sell
refrigerated or frozen pizza. The first frozen pizza is
marketed by the Celentano Brothers. Pizza will soon become
the most popular of all frozen food. |
| 2004 - Chikzzas
has merged out of blue. A new concept selling finest pizzas
in spicy and regular flavors. With original European style
pizza dough is basically the oldest style pizza you can
enjoy, as its recipe is same as one used in early 6th
century and Their fried chicken in a healthy way cooked
in zero cholesterol and fat free oil! With option of spicy
or mild. |
